Craig loving life in Perth after signing new contract

- AIDAN SMITH

LIAM CRAIG has been part of some great St Johnstone teams over the years. But after penning a new one-year deal with the Perth club, the stalwart midfielder admits he is enjoying his football more than ever.

At the age of 34, Craig has had to adapt his game and he is now being utilised as a holding midfielder, as opposed to his more attacking ‘holding winger’ role of old.

The former Falkirk and Hibs man is arguably playing the best football of his career in his newfound position and he is now on the cusp of breaking the all-time appearance record at McDiarmid Park.

That accolade currently belongs to 2014 Scottish Cup hero Steven Anderson on 441 games, but Craig, who is on 426, is fully focussed on just taking one game at a time. “That’s not something I think about but it would be special. I just want to play as many games as I can for the club and for the supporters,” he beamed signing his new contract.

“I remember when I first came to the club. The fans were probably wondering who I was. We might not have the biggest support but it’s loyal.

“I was fortunate enough to play with Ando for most of the games. Alan Main was another who I played loads of games with. You have David after

Wotherspoon here who has over 300 games.

“You look back over the years with the likes of Murray Davidson, Chris Millar, Dave Mackay, Alan Mannus and Frazer Wright.

“It just shows that this is a really good club and a place where players enjoy their football. That has never changed for me.”
