McGinn delighted to get confidence boost for young guns

NIALL McGINN hopes Aberdeen use Saturday’s narrow win over Dumbarton as a springboard to improve their Premiership form.

The Dons created a host of chances but only managed to find the net once through substitute Callum Hendry late on.

For McGinn the win was vital to boost confidence they can take with them into their league campaign.

“It’s massive to go through,” the winger said. “If you go all the way and win the cup, these are the kind of games you look back on. You know how the Scottish Cup is – you always get a few shocks. So we’re delighted, and we definitely created enough chances to win the game.

“After those last couple of months, we’ve just wanted the ball to go in like it did today. Credit to Dumbarton, their keeper pulled off a couple of great saves. The win will breed confidence within the group, and I’m delighted for Callum to get his goal. He’s been working hard, and he took it really well.

“I’m also delighted for young Calvin Ramsay coming in and getting his first start as well. He showed great energy, and young Ethan [Ross] did well, too. So we’ve got plenty of positives to take from this win.”

Hendry came from the bench to bag the winner and McGinn was delighted to see a young Dons side come away with the victory.

The former Celtic player is one of the more seasoned pros in the dressing room and he is keen to take on that responsibility.

“As one of the experienced players in the squad, you always want to try to help the young lads,” he added. “If you lose the ball, I say, so what? Keep confident, and keep getting on the ball. So credit to the young guys today.”
