‘Uncertainty won’t affect Griffiths on the pitch’

- MATTHEW LINDSAY

JOHN Kennedy last night insisted that uncertainty over Leigh Griffiths’s future at Parkhead won’t have an adverse impact on the Celtic striker’s form.

The Glasgow outfit have the option to trigger a one-year extension in Griffiths’s contract this summer – but the 30-yearold has only netted seven times in the 2020/21 campaign and has been on target just once this year.

However, interim manager Kennedy is confident the Scotland internationalist, who has been tipped to join his close friend Scott

Brown at Aberdeen next season, is undeterred by his personal situation.

“It’s something the club often do with contracts,” he said. “If players sign a three-year contract then a lot of the time there is an option year at the end of that. Now Leigh is in a situation where that’s the case. But that’ll be a discussion between Leigh and the club as time develops until the end of the season. That has to remain private.

“But certainly with Leigh, he just has to keep working and keep performing and doing the best he can.

“Leigh is being calm, he’s trained well, and there are no issues there. He is focusing on his football and will deal with the next step when the time is right.”

Asked why Griffiths had struggled to perform at his best this season, Kennedy said: “He’s someone who has not had a huge amount of game time. There are several of our squad who have had difficult seasons and that comes with the situation we found ourselves in.”
