ON THIS DAY
1983 Spain’s football team produced an amazing result in European Championship qualifying. Needing to win by 11 clear goals against Malta, they won 12-1 in Seville to qualify and set the record for highest score in the competition.
2015 Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini were both banned for eight years from all football activity by FIFA’s ethics committee. Blatter’s ban was eventually reduced to six years and Platini’s to four, with Blatter failing in an appeal to the CAS in December 2016.
