Watt insists he ignores criticism over move

- DAVID IRVINE

TONY WATT has blanked any debate over his decision to leave Motherwell for Dundee United.

Much has been made over Watt’s choice to join United in a January transfer move which sees him move down the table rather than up. The striker, 28, joined on

Monday, before making his debut the next night from the bench in the 2-1 home loss to St Mirren.

Quizzed on the heated exchanges over his move, Watt said: “To be honest, I don’t want to waste my breath on some of the people who have spoken about me. I take no notice of it.

“I don’t think I need to respond to that. I’ve got team-mates and management here, and I’ve probably got about 10 people around me whose opinion I really care about. Other than that, well I’m not interested.

“Okay, if someone’s gone and had a wonderful career – if a Darren Fletcher or

Scott Brown’s come out or Gordon Strachan, then fine – but I’ve seen some people come out and speak about me and I just laugh.”

The St Mirren loss saw United extend their dire run to six defeats on the bounce, with their last win coming back in November. But it hasn’t dampened Watt’s excitement for the future at his new club.

“It’s not going to be an overnight thing. We’re just on a bad run, suffering a bit of bad luck, he admitted. “But I’m sure we’ll get on a good run, bounce back and pick up the points.

“It was always going to be difficult [to leave Motherwell] because the club did a lot for me.

“But you need to be selfish at times and I believe I’ve come to a great environment and a big club.”
