A ‘no-brainer’ for Horne to return to Scotstoun

- STUART BATHGATE

THE former Glasgow back Pete Horne has returned to Scotstoun as a skills coach, joining a coaching team that comprises three other assistants – Nigel Carolan, Pete Murchie and Al Dickinson. The Warriors have begun the search for a new head coach after sacking Danny Wilson last week.

Horne, 32, only retired from playing at the end of last year, having represented Glasgow 182 times – a record for a back. Since then he had been coaching Ayrshire Bulls, who now become the second Super6 side in a week to begin the hunt for a head coach after Heriot’s parted company with Andrew Kelly.

“I’m delighted to be back at Scotstoun,” Horne said on the Glasgow website. “As soon as I’d stepped away from playing, I had the goal of getting back into the pro game as a coach as soon as I felt ready.

“When this opportunity came up, it was a no-brainer. I’m so invested in this club and the city that it was an easy decision. I want to help this club back to where it belongs and back challenging at the top of the table.”

Warriors managing director Al Kellock added: “To be able to add one of Scotland’s most promising young coaches to our team for next season is a real boost for us.

“Pete is someone who understands exactly what it means to be a Warrior and to represent not only this club, but this city. “He understands and buys into our club values, and I know that he will do whatever it takes to help to drive this club forward and challenge for silverware.

“His work ethic and willingness to go the extra mile to help his team-mates made him one of the greatest players ever to wear the Glasgow shirt, and I fully believe he has all the traits necessary to be a huge success as skills coach.”
