Tavernier signs new deal

Rangers captain to stay until 2026 and could end career at Ibrox

- CHRIS JACK

RANGERS captain James Tavernier has agreed a new contract to extend his stay at Ibrox. And he could now finish his career in Glasgow after finalising a longterm deal that sees him commit to Rangers once again.

The right-back has been a hugely influential figure on and off the park since moving from Wigan Athletic in 2015 as he was signed for just £250,000 by Mark Warburton.

Tavernier’s current deal was due to run until the summer of 2024 but a two-year extension has now been agreed as Giovanni van Bronckhorst ties down one of his key players.

The fresh terms will take Tavernier beyond a decade of service at Ibrox as he becomes of one the most important figures in the recent history of Rangers.

Tavernier skippered his side to a historic 55th league title under the guidance of Steven Gerrard and was agonisingly close to lifting the Europa League last term as Rangers lost to Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville.

The Englishman got his hands on the Scottish Cup silverware at Hampden just days later and he will now lead the Light Blues into the new Premiership campaign and their upcoming crack at the Champions League.

The deal for Tavernier is another significant boost for Van Bronckhorst as he continues to shape his squad following the arrival of a handful of fresh faces ahead of his first full campaign in charge.

Rangers continue their pre-season schedule against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday before making the trip to Livingston next weekend as they begin their bid to regain the top-flight title.
