Team Scotland round-up

-

IT was third time lucky for Micky Yule who finally got onto the Commonwealth Games podium, winning a joyful powerlifting bronze medal having finished fourth in both 2014 and 2018.

Despite his previous Commonwealth Games disappointments, Yule went into Birmingham 2022 full of optimism having had the result of his career last summer, winning Paralympic bronze in Tokyo. His confidence was justified, with a best lift of 197kgs in the +72kgs final enough for third place as he won Team Scotland’s second medal of day seven of the Games.

Cyclist John Archibald produced an impressive display in the men’s time trial on the streets of Wolverhampton but it wasn’t enough for a medal, with the 31-year-old finishing sixth in a world-class field.

On a technically challenging course which saw several riders overshooting corners and ending up either in the barriers, or on the ground, Archibald performed admirably at the end of what has been a busy week which also saw him compete on the track.

“I think it went as well as I could have expected really,” he said. “I enjoyed it on the day, as having seen the course before hand, it was quite a scary prospect, but it went quite well.

“It’s a privilege to be a part of the Games and you’ve got to really soak that in.”

Mark Stewart and Finn Crockett were also in action in the men’s event, finishing 14th and 22th respectively while in the women’s race, Anna Shackley was 10th and Neah Evans was 17th.

It was another successful day for Scotland’s lawn bowlers with the para mixed pairs thumping England 21-6 to move into today’s final,

Iain McLean recording two victories to move into the quarter-finals of the men’s singles as did the men’s four who also progressed to the last eight.

The beach volleyball pair of Lynne Beattie and Mel Coutts moved into the quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Solomon Islands.

In squash, both of Scotland’s mixed doubles pairs moved in to the quarter-finals as did the women’s doubles pair.

In badminton, two-time medallist Kirsty Gilmour eased into the last 16 of the women’s singles while in table tennis, all the Scottish pairs were eliminated in the doubles events.
