Head for the hills in a spectacular summer
THE wonderful summer weather we have enjoyed so far this year looks set to continue, so there has never been a better time for a ‘staycation’ than now. Especially if the kids are getting under your feet already.
For families, the milder conditions and the longer evenings offer the perfect opportunity to sample the great outdoors. The high season in Scotland is usually all too fleeting, so it is important to book early to avoid disappointment.
Summer family breaks in Scotland are ideal for getting out there and enjoying activities such as walking, mountain biking or canoeing. The Affric Kintail Way, a new 44-mile trail stretching from Drumnadrochit on the shores of Loch Ness to Morvich by Loch Duich, offers the perfect chance to experience all of the outdoor adventure that the country has to offer.
The route follows a wilder landscape than the Great Glen Way and invites a stopover at Scotland’s most remote Youth Hostel at Alltbeithe in Glen Affric. Although a long-distance trail, by following the waymarked paths from east to west starting at Drumnadrochit, you will benefit from a much more gradual ascent.
Dotted along the trail you will find a series of quirky and stylish places to stay, such as the Glenkirk B&B in Drumnadrochit, offering four-star comfort in what was once the village church, or the spectacularly situated Heisgeir B&B, nestled at the foot of the Five Sisters of Kintail in Morvich.
A little closer to the central belt, try exploring the natural beauty of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, with its unspoiled natural beauty.
Perfect for walking, cycling or touring, there is a host of charming hotels to find too, such as the Poppies Hotel & Restaurant in Callander, which is close to a number of historic attractions and perfectly situated for rambling.
