The NHS may be looking to recruit doctors from overseas to deal with shortages in the service, but that doesn’t mean that foreign medics can just walk straight into a job. This eye-opening documentar­y, which was shot over the course of 10 months, reveals just what it takes to work on a British ward as it charts the experience­s of doctors from everywhere from Brazil to Egypt. The film reveals that many of them find the training tougher than expected, especially as they are adjusting to a new health system, culture and, in some cases, language while studying for their exams. Then there’s the patients, some of whom have much higher expectatio­ns than the medics are used to. Can they pass their exams and land a job in the NHS, or will they be left wondering if the money they spent coming to the UK really was a wise investment?

WEDNESDAY Paul O’Grady’s Little Heroes (STV, 8pm)

The presenter has dedicated himself to promoting the work of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in recent years, but now he’s turning his attention to Great Ormond Street Hospital, which has been helping sick children since 1852. It’s been at the forefront of paediatric care for decades and continues to be praised for its high standards and the lengths its staff will go to keep their patients healthy and happy. As with his For the Love of Dogs series, expect to need a tissue or two because there are sure to be some tear-jerking moments along the way. In the opening episode O’Grady meets Mackenzie, a 13-year-old who hopes a plastic surgeon will be able to create him a new ear, while siblings Emily and Luke describe living with cystic fibrosis.

The Real Marigold Hotel (BBC1, 9pm)

Selina Scott, Susan George, Stephanie Beacham, Ian and Janette Tough, Syd Little, Peter Dean, Bob Champion and Stanley Johnson embrace life in Udaipur in India. They receive a grand invitation from the maharanah and are invited to mingle with Udaipur’s high society at the City Palace, ending the week with a trip to the northern state of the Punjab to visit one of India’s most spectacula­r and holiest cities and the magnificen­t Golden Temple in Amritsar.

The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco (STV, 9pm)

As Iris struggles with husband Marcus’ imminent deployment overseas, she and the other women delve into the mysterious death of a friend, uncovering a marriage built on deception.
