Mary, Queen of Scots (1971) (Film4, 11am)

SAOIRSE Ronan and Margot Robbie can currently be seen in cinemas in a film of the same name, making it the perfect time to revisit this earlier biopic charting the turbulent, if short, life of the doomed Scottish monarch. Gangster No1 (2000) (Film4, 11.25pm)

DIRECTOR Paul McGuigan’s violent but stylish thriller stars Malcolm McDowell as an unnamed gangster who is shocked to learn that an old “business associate”, Freddie Mays, is about to be released from prison after serving a 30-year sentence. The action then flashes back to the 1960s when the gangster (played as a young man by Paul Bettany) became Mays’ (David Thewlis) right-hand man, only for their relationship to sour when his mentor fell for a nightclub hostess Karen (Saffron Burrows). It may prove too brutal for some tastes but McDowell and Bettany are terrific in their shared lead role.
