PICK OF THE WEEK
of people, it was inevitable choir master Gareth Malone would help lift the spirits with a similar series of his own. (And he’s obviously fine about being omitted from the Military Wives film, which was inspired by his work). In the first of a three-parter, he sets out to bring the nation together through music during the Covid lockdown, by getting people from all walks of life to perform a specially composed song. Episode one focuses on frontline workers, all of whom have a courageous story to tell.
Ben Fogle: New Lives in the Wild (C5, 9pm)
Fogle is reunited with seafarer Rick, who has moved on to pastures new since their original encounter. When Rick last appeared on the series, he was living off the coast of French Polynesia, but he has since made a fresh start on the Pacific island of Fiji. In the intervening years, Rick has acquired a new boat and is now travelling alone - but remains as enthusiastic as ever about his unusual lifestyle and believes that anyone can follow in his wake and gain a newfound sense of freedom – if they have the right attitude.
WEDNESDAY
Match of the Day Live (BBC Two, 5.30pm & BBC One, 7pm)
The latest free-to-air Premier League match sees the bottom club, Norwich City, striving for three priceless points against an Everton team that have clawed their way into mid-table safety since the arrival of Italian manager Carlo Ancelloti in December. The Canaries’ only away win of the season so far was at Goodison Park in November, and completing the double over the Toffees at Carrow Road tonight would give their chances of avoiding a return to the Championship after only one season a massive boost.
Bradley Walsh & Son: Breaking Dad (STV, 8pm)
As anyone who saw the recent tribute to Bradley Walsh will testify, the star is a force of nature who seems as adept presenting game shows as he is playing it straight in dramas. This series of adventures has proved to be hugely entertaining as Brad and son Barney are put through their paces while travelling around at ITV’s expense. Just the sight of a stressed Bradley driving an RV while en route to a parachute drop made for priceless TV.
The latest in this run, which features the best of series one and two, sees them visit to Key West in Florida, home to one of Bradley’s favourite writers, Ernest Hemingway. Naturally team Walsh pay a trip to his favourite bar, Sloppy Joe’s in the Historic District.
The Railway 24/7 (C5, 9pm)
Cheap TV this may be, but it’s also a fascinating look at what may (or may not) get many of us from A to B, often at the busiest times of day. As the fly-on-the-station wall documentary continues, cameras follow commercial director Darren. He launches a new scheme to deal with passengers not paying for tickets with on-the-spot fines and
The contest, hosted by Joe Lycett, reaches its final stage as the last three contestants take on a trio of celebration wear challenges before the winner is announced. Judges Patrick Grant and Esme Young start by challenging the sewers to
mojo back after battling a brain condition and a lifelong military man who would like a smart casual look perfect for a single gentleman in his sixties. Plus, advice for viewers on what jeans work best for different body shapes.
The School That Tried To End Racism (C4, 9pm)
This new series follows members of a school as they try to help its students uncover and eradicate hidden racial biases. Led by experts and inspired by similar programmes from US schools, a class of 11 to 12-year-olds takes part in activities designed to challenge everything they thought they knew about race. In episode one, the students are tested for racial bias and split into different work groups according to their skin colour. Cameras follow a white British student and his black Caribbean best friend who are stunned to discover the level of unconscious bias they carry. And a 12-year-old bi-racial girl is keen to find out what racial group she belongs in: white or black?
Make Me Famous (BBC1, 9pm)
While E4 celebrates the 20th anniversary of Big Brother, those old clips of folks made famous by the Orwellian compound does make some wonder about the impact of fame on reality TV stars. That’s the theme of this one-off drama penned by DJ Reggie Yates. It centres on Billy (Tom Brittney), who a year ago thought his life was set to change after appearing on a constructed reality show. However, while some of his fellow contestants’ careers are thriving, assorted tabloid stories force his vulnerabilities to the surface. The excellent cast includes Amanda Abbington as Billy’s mum Amanda, a midwife who lives alone in a flat, and Aiysha Hart is Kelly, one of the producers on the reality show.
Vintage Voltage (Quest, 9pm)
This new series follows the ingenious team of mechanics at Electric Classic Cars who restore, rebuild and convert classics into electric dream cars for future generations. The first episode focuses on a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, which combined the chassis and mechanicals of the Type 1 (Beetle) with styling by Italy’s Carrozzeria Ghia and handbuilt bodywork by German coachbuilding house Karmann. But although it looked beautiful, the car featured car never went as fast as it looked. Moggy and his team have been asked to convert the vehicle to electric power but must give it the performance it deserves without ruining the classic driving experience.
FRIDAY
Jamie’s Quick & Easy Food (C4, 8pm)
For millions of us, our diets have been up and down over the past few months as too many trips to the fridge have led to endless snacking. Thankfully, Jamie Oliver is on hand to get us back on track with some tasty dishes. And if you love lamb curry, you’ll be drooling over this episode as Jamie cooks one up. But if you prefer flavour-packed harissa squash salad, then the chef’s recipe will leave some viewers hastily scribbling notes while adding ingredients to their next home delivery or shopping trip. Those who want a speedy rose pesto prawn pasta are in luck as there are also tips on how to rustle that up. And if you fancy something sweet to round things off, a guide to making Buddy’s flapjack biscuits should really tickle the tastebuds.
The Glastonbury Experience Live
(BBC2, 8.30pm)
This is a big year for one of the world’s best loved music concerts, but like so many annual events, the Glastonbury Festival has also been put on hold because of you know what. With so much archive footage, there’s little wonder festival regulars Jo Whiley and Mark Radcliffe are on hand to introduce some of the best bits such as previously unseen or rarely shown moments. They include the Rolling Stones’ stunning headline set in 2013; PJ Harvey’s rocking 2004 performance; Lizzo’s acoustic turn in the BBC garden area. Plus, Florence + the Machine’s debut on one of the main stages in 2010, and a reminder of Stormzy’s memorable headline set in 2019. It’s the next best thing to being at the (hypothetical) 50th anniversary festival.
Celebrity Snoop Dogs (C4, 8.30pm)
New series. Cameras go inside the locked-down houses of well-known faces around the country. However, the filming is done by the homeowners’ dogs – so-called Snoop Dogs. While the pooches sniff out treats, chew shoes and go for naps, viewers can play along with the guessing game to try and work out which celebrity owns the adorable doggy. The opening instalment features a four-year-old Lhasa apso and an eight-year-old Labrador mix. Narrated by Kevin McCloud.
A Greek Odyssey with Bettany Hughes (C5, 9pm)
The historian and classicist goes Greek islandhopping to explore their history from the time of the Ancients to the present day. In Santorini, she visits a Minoan city preserved in time by one of the most violent volcanic eruptions in history. Bettany’s next port of call is Naxos, where in an abandoned marble quarry, she finds a genuinely monumental statue of the god that has lain there for thousands of years, before heading to a taverna to take part in some local festivities. The presenter later arrives in Sifnos, where long-distance communications were mastered millennia before telegrams or telephones.
Elbow at Glastonbury 2011 (BBC Four, 9pm)
Glastonbury 2020 may have been cancelled, but the BBC are still marking what would have been a milestone year for the festival, with a series of special programmes. They continue on BBC Four tonight with Elbow’s performance in 2011, as the band take to the Pyramid Stage in the year of the release of their fifth album Build A Rocket Boys! That’s followed by Arthur Lee & Love: Forever Changes at Glastonbury 2003 (10pm), in which Lee gave a magical performance of the album on The Other Stage; Glastonbury Backstage Acoustics (11pm) a new series featuring impromptu, stripped-down sets in the presentation tent; and Jay-Z at Glastonbury 2008 (11.30pm) in which the American rapper blew the house down with a set packed full of his hits.
