Bridge of Spies (2015) (More4, 9pm)

James Donovan, a lawyer in

1950s New York, is hired to represent Rudolf Abel, a Soviet spy in a showcase trial designed to demonstrate the fairness of the US justice system. In the face of public condemnation, he argues against the death penalty, a stance that years later leads to his involvement in an exchange of prisoners in East Germany. Steven Spielberg rarely puts a foot wrong with this superb fact-based Cold War drama which features a terrific performance from Tom Hanks as Donovan.

Wild Things (1998) (5 STAR, 11.05pm)

When a high-school counsellor is accused of rape by a wealthy student, it seems as if he’s heading to prison, especially when a less well-connected classmate comes forward to back up the story. However, a detective becomes convinced that the apparently open-and-shut case doesn’t add up – and it seems he may be on to something as the investigation takes a surprising twist. Wild Things is campy, trashy fun, but it’s also a smart little thriller. The excellent cast includes Neve Campbell, Denise Richards, Matt Dillon, Robert Wagner and Kevin Bacon.

Alas, MPs refuse to honour a voting-rights bill amendment, so Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep) stirs her troops into direct action.
