THIS WEEK’S BEST FILMS
SATURDAY
Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017) (C4, 9pm) Premiere
Secret agents Eggsy and Merlin join forces with their US counterparts to bring down a psychotic femme fatale. Thankfully they are assisted by a veteran hero brought back from the dead. Matthew Vaughn’s follow up to the first Kingsman adventure begins with a frantic chase, and doesn’t let up for most of the movie.
Memento (2000) (BBC2, 9.45pm)
The film that set director Christopher Nolan on the road to stardom is a compelling thriller starring Guy Pearce. He plays former insurance investigator Leonard Shelby, who suffers from a rare, untreatable form of memory loss, preventing him from remembering what happened 15 minutes ago. A fiendishly clever and ambitious thriller, recounting Leonard’s story in alternating parallel time-frames. Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano provide solid support.
SUNDAY
Casablanca (1942) (BBC2, 4.20pm)
Even as the Second World War rages, Rick (Humphrey Bogart), the American owner of a popular Moroccan nightclub, prides himself on not getting involved with politics. However, his cynicism is put to the test when his old flame Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) needs his assistance to get her Czech resistance leader husband (Paul Henreid) out of Casablanca. The chemistry between Bogart and Bergman sizzles, but let’s also hear it for the incredible supporting cast, especially Claude Rains as the cheerfully corrupt Captain Renault.
The Living Daylights (1987) (ITV4, 8pm)
Timothy Dalton steps into James Bond’s shoes and finds himself up to his neck in intrigue and adventure
cusp of their big break. It’s anybody’s guess whether one or more of these acts will become breakout stars after appearing here, but it should be a lot of fun finding out. Mawaan Rizwan co-hosts this first episode, which features Kae Kurd, Flo & Joan and Sophie Duker. Plus, Rob Beckett also delivers a few new gags.
Match of the Day (BBC1, 10.20pm)
Gary Lineker presents action from the opening fixtures of the Premier League season, including Liverpool v Leeds United at Anfield and Tottenham Hotspur v Everton at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Leeds were playing their first top-flight match since 2004, but could
