Hard Cell (Netflix, Thu)
Catherine Tate projects are, to coin a phrase, like buses you wait ages for one to appear and then two come along at once.
The Nan Movie, featuring one of the most popular characters from her TV sketch show, was released last month, and now she’s back on the box with a mockumentary for the streaming giant.
The six-part series is set in the fictional female prison HMP Woldsley and sees Tate play a range of different characters, including governor Laura Willis, who believes that creativity leads to rehabilitation, and Big Viv, a psychopath serving a life sentence.
Cameras follow the inmates as they rehearse a musical directed by ex-EastEnders star Cheryl Fergison. Funny and moving, this promises to be a big hit for its creator.
Roar (Apple TV+, from Fri)
Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, the creators of GLOW, are back with a new project.
Roar is an eight-part
anthology series based on a collection of short stories by Cecelia Ahern, the Irish author of such hit novels at PS, I Love You, Where Rainbows End and If You Could See Me Now.
Each of them offer an insightful, poignant and often hilarious portrait of what it means to be a modern woman.
Witty and whimsical, they’ve been described as darkly comic feminist fables which blend magical realism, familiar domestic and professional scenarios, and futuristic worlds.
Among the impressive allstar cast are Nicole Kidman, Cynthia Erivo, Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, Meera Syal and Merritt Weaver.
Anatomy of a Scandal (Netflix, from Fri)
Crime has been a big hit for Netflix during the past few years. Its documentaries have hit the headlines, but its adaptations of popular novels from the genre have also gone down a treat with viewers.
The latest is this take on Sarah Vaughan’s international bestseller, adapted and executive produced by David E Kelley and Melissa James Gibson, whose previous credits include Big Little Lies and House of Cards.
The plot focuses on MP James Whitehouse, who seems to live the perfect life with his wife Sophie, but barrister Kate Woodcroft is about to turn their world upside down as a dangerous secret comes to light. Rupert Friend, Sienna Miller, Naomi Scott and Michelle Dockery head the cast.
