NEW TO MARKET
POLLOKSHIELDS is said to be the largest and most complete example of a Victorian garden suburb in Scotland, if not the UK. Located on the south side of Glasgow, construction started in 1851 on land owned by the Stirling Maxwell family of Pollok House and continued through to the early 20th Century, providing a mix of one-off mansion houses, elegant terraces, and some of the best tenement buildings in the city.
As an architectural legacy, this suburb is full of dazzling gems, such as Pollokshields Burgh Hall, designed by architect Henry Edward Clifford, who also designed handsome tenement buildings on Terregles Avenue, Shields Road – and the renowned Art Nouveau tenements on Fotheringay Road, one of which houses a newly marketed, larger-style town flat.
Occupying a first-floor corner position with an open outlook to the front, 9 Fotheringay Road is an exceptional property, reconfigured to an exacting standard by the present owners to create a uniquely spacious and stylish four-bedroomed home.
Accessed via an original Art Nouveau tiled stairwell complemented by a front door displaying bespoke, period appropriate stained-glass panels, the apartment’s almost 50ft reception hall paves the way to a supersized open-plan living room. This boasts a corner oriel bay window, feature fireplace – and open-plan to the rear, a contemporary fitted kitchen with integrated appliances, granite work surfaces and breakfast bar.
Continuing, on either side of the hall are three double bedrooms (one currently a home office, while two incorporate imaginatively designed in-built storage), a very large family bathroom with underfloor heating and freestanding double-ended bath, and yet more storage – three walk-in hall cupboards (one of which serves as a pantry).
Saving the best till last, at the end of the hall is a door into a separate master suite, comprising inner hall, 20ft bay-windowed bedroom, separate dressing room and opulent fully tiled en suite shower room,
with twin basins and large walk-in shower.
Presented in turnkey condition throughout, the apartment combines original period detailing with an exceptional specification and outstanding interior finish. Other notable features include security door entrance system, communal rear garden, on-street parking on Fotheringay Road, and easy walking access to local amenities, including Maxwell Park, Pollok Country Park, and two train stations.
