Focus on Kirkintilloch
will be as big, bright and brilliant as usual.
The Council is working with East Dunbartonshire Tobacco Alliance to promote the canal festival as a Clean Air Event – with tobacco-free areas.
East Dunbartonshire Council Leader Rhondda Geekie said: “It’s full steam ahead for Kirkintilloch Canal Festival, with a stunning range of activities and entertainment lined up.
“From dancers and jugglers to singers and magicians, if you’ve got a performing skill we want to hear from you.
“I’m delighted that council colleagues and partners have once again pulled out the stops to ensure the Canal Festival offers a sparkling range of fun for all the family.”
Kirkintilloch Canal Festival runs from Monday, August 15 to Sunday, August 21, with a range of boat trips during the week – combining canal, culinary delights and culture.
Excitement will reach a crescendo over the festival weekend – with Get Active Saturday and the Gala Sunday. These will take place around the Marina, Barleybank, the grassed area at Sainsbury’s, the new Lairdsland Primary School and New Colle ge Lanarkshire – Kirkintilloch Campus
Active Saturday includes such delights as canoeing, archery and climbing on a climbing wall, joining in the Trails and Tales stone carving taster sessions (with EDLC), beat the goalie, water orbs, Nerf wars, roller-skating, boat trips and of course plenty to eat and drink.
T here will also be t he chance to Meet Team Noble – the intrepid rowers who are setting off across the Atlantic for the Fire Fighters Charity.
Saturday’s festivities will culminate in a live concert at the Marina – starting at 7pm – featuring a range of artists. That will be followed at 9.30pm by a fireworks spectacular featuring music by Greg Friel.
Gala Sunday will get off to a flying start with a pirates street theatre, face painting and a funfair. There will be further chances to try canoeing and roller-skating, or to set out on boat trips. Among those performing will be the Kirkintilloch Male Voice Choir and there will be and open afternoon at Martin Veterinary Centre
Singer- songwriter Ka t e Kross, and Emma and the Ragmen will be performing live and there will be a market and classic car show.
The Glasgow Barnstormers will also be demonstrating their remotecontrolled aeroplanes.
