Dundee do a demolition job

Dundee found their goal touch in the second half to ignite their Betfred Cup prospects with a 6-2 win over Dumbarton.

Greg Stewart hit a hat-trick and Kane Hemmings helped himself to a brace in the Group A clash after Dumbarton led at half-time.

Stewart opened the scoring but Frazer Wright scrambled an equaliser before Gregor Buchanan put the visitors ahead.

Hemmings equalised at the start of the second half with a composed finish and Darren O’Dea put Dundee in front before Stewart made it 4-2 with a solo effort. Stewart completed his hattrick to secure the victory before Hemmings scored the sixth.

But East Fife lead the group after beating Peterhead 2-1 through goals from Jonathan Page and a Paul McManus penalty.

St Johnstone beat Falkirk 3-0 at McDiarmid Park in Group B with Danny Swanson scoring twice from the penalty spot and Joe Shaugnessy also on target. The Perth side were awarded three penalty kicks in the first half but Liam Craig saw his effort saved by Danny Rogers before Swanson was handed the duties.

Raith Rovers upstaged holders Ross County by taking the bonus point in a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw in Dingwall.

Alloa Athletic beat Montrose 2-0 at Links Park to sit second. Greig Spence gave them a half-time lead and Isaac Layne sealed the points with a diving header.

Inverness and Dundee United drew 1-1 in Group C but United won the penalty shoot-out to secure the bonus point, with Scott Boden on target for Inverness and Stewart Murdoch for United in normal time.

Dunfermlin­e Athletic kept up the pressure with a 3-0 win at Fife neighbours Cowdenbeat­h while Ayr United beat Edinburgh City 1-0 in Group G, Brian Gilmour with the only goal early in the game.
