Scots to watch
Laura Muir
To suggest the Milnathort runner is on fire is an understatement. The 24-yearold finished 2016 as the fastest 1500m runner in the world and continued that form into 2017 by winning her first major championship titles in the 1500m and 3000m at the European Indoor Championships. The World Championship trials should be a mere formality.
Zoey Clark
She began the year as a relative unknown but a storming run of 51.84 seconds in Geneva this month saw her rocket to the top of the British 400m rankings. The 22-year-old from Aberdeen has a European Under-23 relay gold but is yet to gain individual selection for a senior global championship.
Chris O’Hare
Ranked third in Britain in the 1500m behind Jake Wightman and Mo Farah, the Edinburgh man is the most experienced miler going for World Championship selection. The 26-year-old Boston-based runner has gone sub-3:35 minutes this season and will be looking to reclaim the title he won in 2013.
Josh Kerr
The 19-year-old from Edinburgh wrote himself into the history books this year by winning both the NCAA indoor mile and the outdoor 1500m titles. Based in New Mexico, the reigning European Under-20 champion is the fourth ranked of the four athletes going for three World Championship places but has proven that he knows how to win when it matters.
Eilish McColgan
McColgan has had a torrid time with injuries in the past few years but since switching from the steeplechase to the 5000m, she has shown she is a worldclass performer when fit. A European indoor bronze in the 3000m in March indicates she is close to her best form.
Andrew Butchart
The defending British 5000m champion burst into the public’s consciousness last year with his sixth place in the Olympic final and the Dunblane runner has looked sharp this year, setting personal bests in the 1500m, mile and 3000m. Others to keep an eye on are Eilidh Doyle in the 400m hurdles, Allan Smith and Emma Nuttall in the high jump, Lynsey Sharp in the 800m, Chris Bennett and Mark Dry in the hammer, and Steph Twell and Beth Potter in the 5000m.
