TODAY All The Money In The World (2017) (Channel 4, 9pm)

BASED on one version of events surroundin­g the 1973 kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III, Ridley Scott’s propulsive thriller sustains dramatic tension with aplomb as David Scarpa’s script ricochets between the gang holding the boy hostage and the dysfunctio­nal Getty family. Oil tycoon Getty (Christophe­r Plummer) refuses to plunder a single cent from his billion-dollar empire. Instead, he hires security consultant Fletcher Chace (Mark Wahlberg) to rescue the boy.

Call Me By Your Name (2017) (Film4, 9pm)

ELIO Perlman (Timothee Chalamet) spends the summer in an Italian villa, while his scholarly father (Michael Stuhlbarg) studies Greco-Roman culture. Mr Perlman’s handsome American intern Oliver (Armie Hammer) arrives and Elio surrenders his light and airy bedroom to the visitor. Initially, Elio is irritated by Oliver’s presence and observes the newcomer’s effect on local women with voyeuristi­c, cool detachment. Gradually, embers of attraction between Elio and Oliver ignite a raging inferno of sexual desire.

SHRINKING violet Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) works in the toy section of Frankenber­g’s department store. She has an adoring boyfriend, Richard (Jake Lacy), but her humdrum life lacks excitement until glamorous housewife Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett) sashays into the store looking for a Christmas present. Their chance encounter eventually leads to a passionate affair.

On Chesil Beach (2017) (BBC2, 9pm)

GIFTED violinist Florence Ponting (Saoirse Ronan) and history graduate Edward Mayhew (Billy Howle) prepare to spend their first night together as husband and wife in a hotel located close to Chesil Beach. As afternoon bleeds into evening, a mosaic of flashbacks illuminate­s the couple’s radically different background­s. Tension in the room builds gradually to the moment Florence and Edward must consummate their marriage.

THURSDAY

The Nice Guys (2016) (ITV4, 11pm)

HIRED heavy Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) is paid by a young woman called Amelia Kuttner (Margaret Qualley) to scare off the low-rent private detective Holland March (Ryan Gosling), who has been asking for her around town. The first meeting of these two men ends in bloodshed and broken bones, but Jackson and Holland reluctantl­y agree to work together when Amelia subsequent­ly vanishes without trace. Unfortunat­ely, a hitman called John Boy (Matt Bomer) is also on her trail. An enjoyable missing person’s caper set in sexually liberated 1977 Los Angeles.
