When press broke the law to be at Jimmy Boyle’s wedding
WHAT a bunch of rogues at the wedding of convicted killer Jimmy Boyle to psychiatrist Sarah Trevelyan at Balfron in 1980. Not the wedding guests, but the loveable rogues of the media seen here taking pictures or notes as the couple emerged from the registrar’s office. That might even be Herald Saturday magazine columnist Fidelma Cook over on the left.
Whatalarkthatdaywasin January. Sarah, wearing a purple trouser jump-suit and an astrakhan coat as The Herald faithfully recorded, drove up to Barlinnie Prison in her Volkswagen Beetle to pick up Jimmy from the prison’s Special Unit, to drive him to Balfron, followed by a car full of detectives, and then a string of press cars whose drivers were happy to go through red lights to keep up with the cortege.
Jimmy, “blue cord bomber jacket, blue jeans, open neck checked shirt, tan sneakers” - The Herald, could only reply: “I’m sorry but I’m not allowed to say anything” when the press urged him to comment on his nuptials.
The ceremony took about 20 minutes, someone threw some confetti, and the couple got back in the Volkswagen to return Jimmy to Barlinnie. The couple remained married for 20 years, had two children, and then went their separate ways.
