Photo shows site of Mars craft crash
DEBRIS from a European spacecraft that crashed on Mars last week can be seen in a new image taken by a Nasa orbiter. The photo, taken on Tuesday, shows a 2.4 metrewide crater and a long dark streak thought to be linked to the impact and possible explosion.
On October 19, the Schiaparelli probe fell from a height of more than a mile after it ejected its parachute and switched off its retro-rockets too early, scientists believe.
It smashed into the landing site near the Martian equator at around 186mph.
A white spot identified in an image captured by a camera on Nasa’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has been confirmed as the lander’s parachute.
