Folk singer hits high note beating Bowie to take a top music prize
A SCOTS folk singer who discovered pop princess KT Tunstall has fought off competition from superstars David Bowie and Leonard Cohen to land a top music award.
The latest album from the relatively unknown King Creosote – Astronaut Meets Appleman – has been voted the Best International Record of 2016 by Spain’s best selling newspaper ABC.
King Creosote, real name Kenny Anderson, walked off with the accolade despite being up against albums such as Bowie’s last record Blackstar, Cohen’s You Want It Darker and Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool.He also triumphed over long players from world famous solo artists Iggy Pop, Beyonce and Paul Simon, as well as established bands such as Teenage Fanclub Tindersticks.
The respected newspaper described the 50-year-old Scotsman’s latest record as containing “songs that plunge their roots into the cold and idyllic Scotland – the perfect homeland of pop”.
Astronaut Meets Appleman was also said to be “a delightful record of pop craftsmanship and excitement” and is “a magical fusion between irresistible pop melodies spilling on to old arrangements of his land”. The award was voted for by the newspaper’s arts critics and readership. and
