Farron asks supporter to smell his dog
LIBERAL Democrat leader Tim Farron invited a voter at a campaign event to “smell my spaniel”.
Mr Farron’s bizarre comment was made to a LibDem activist who brought his own dog along to hear the party leader speak in Cambridge.
Video footage shows Mr Farron, who owns a springer spaniel called Jasper, approaching the sandycoloured dog – who was wearing a LibDem rosette – and say: “Smell my spaniel.”
The phrase was swiftly taken up by Twitter users, many of whom had only just finished discussing what Boris Johnson meant when he called Jeremy Corbyn a “mugwump”.
Sam Roake joked Mr Farron had “put a spaniel in the works” of the election.
Simon Charles posted a joke linking the remark to Mr Farron’s controversy over whether gay sex was sinful, saying: “Let he who is without sin smell the first spaniel.”
