Elton show among targets in bomb plot
A TEENAGER may have been plotting to carry out a bomb attack on a concert by Sir Elton John in a London park.
Haroon Syed could have aimed to explode the device on the 15th anniversary of the US September 11 terrorist attacks.
The details emerged after Syed, 19, from Hounslow, west London, pleaded guilty yesterday at the Old Bailey to preparation of terrorist acts after a last-ditch attempt to get his case thrown out failed.
The court heard how Syed tried to get weapons online, including a bomb vest or explosives, and trawled the web to find a busy area in the UK capital, such as Oxford Circus, to launch a mass casualty attack. Other potential locations included the Elton John concert in Hyde Park.
Syed was caught chatting online with officers from the British Security Service who posed as a fellow extremist who could help him source the weapons.
Judge Michael Topolski, QC, adjourned sentencing until June 8 for reports . He said Syed faced a “discretionary life sentence”.
As Syed was held, his brother Nadir, 23, was jailed for life, with a minimum of 15 years, for plotting an Islamic Stateinspired Remembrance Day attack.
