Jobs threat for 450 staff on three oil rigs

HUN­DREDS of oil jobs are un­der threat on three ma­jor drilling rigs which are cur­rently tied up in port due to a lack of work.

Aberdeen-based Stena an­nounced it was in con­sul­ta­tion with a to­tal of 450 peo­ple em­ployed be­tween the three rigs which are in Las Pal­mas, Gran Ca­naria.

The drilling con­trac­tor said about 57 of those in­volved in the con­sul­ta­tion l i ve in Aberdeen or Aberdeen­shire and those af­fected are rig-based.

Stena stressed that not all of those peo­ple would lose their jobs.

The com­pany said it was still try­ing to de­cide how many work­ers it would need to lay off, but it hoped to win new con­tracts.
