First aid teacher saved by pupils after suffering heart attack

A group of first aid trainees thought their instructor was role-playing during a class on how to perform lifesaving CPR as he had a heart attack during a lecture. David Knowles, 77, began to lose consciousness as he told his students how to resuscitate people at his local church in Exeter. Some of the group thought Mr Knowles was giving a demonstration as he lay on the floor feeling faint and unwell. They managed to save his life after he told them what to do just before he passed out.

He told the BBC: "I had just started my lecture and we were talking about cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The more senior members of the group had asked for a demonstration ... She thought I was role playing, but I told her it was real and that I was going to lose consciousness." Mr Knowles suffered a cardiac arrest but survived because his trainees dialled 999 and performed CPR until paramedics rushed to the scene.

Three men jailed for repeatedly raping young girl

Three men who repeatedly raped a young girl and made her pregnant have been jailed following a trial for historic sex abuse. The girl was subject to “systematic" abuse between 1987 and 1990, when she was aged between 12 and 15 years old and living in north London. The victim came forward to report the crimes to police in June 2015, and specialist officers launched an investigation.

The three men were all convicted of rape following a two-week trial at Harrow Crown Court and were each given prison sentences of between five and eight years. Noel Hutton, 65, was jailed for seven years. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said he was known to the victim’s mother and used his position of trust to abuse her.

He was joined in the abuse by his brother, Robert Hutton, 63, who was sentenced to five years' imprisonment. Alvin Muschette, 55, who also knew the family and joined the brothers in the abuse, was sentenced to eight years' imprisonment. The court heard the attacks took place over three years at various addresses in Brent, north-west London.

Security teams sent in to deal with prison ‘incident’

Specially-trained prison security teams were drafted in to deal with an "incident" at a jail last night. Socalled Tornado squads, equipped to deal with riots, were sent to HMP Hewell near Redditch, Worcestershire, after trouble broke out on one of the prison's wings.

The Prison Service said a "small number" of inmates at the category B jail were involved. It is understood a handful of prisoners refused to follow prison officers' orders and had been attempting to cause damage to the wing.

Hewell jail, which opened in its current form in 2008, is made up of six housing blocks or wings - while there is a separate open prison called the Grange. In an announced inspection report published in January, Hewell was described as "a prison with many challenges and areas of serious concern".
