PM urged to condemn jailing of reporters in US
Pressure comes after arrest of Independent correspondent
Boris Johnson last night faced pressure to condemn the jailing of foreign journalists on American soil following the arrest of Andrew Buncombe,
The Independent’s chief US correspondent. Buncombe has been charged with failure to disperse after being detained in Seattle and spending 10 hours in jail, despite identifying himself as a reporter. The Society of Editors called on the prime minister to raise the issue with Washington, following the detention of other journalists. Groups including Amnesty criticised the use of excessive force against Buncombe, who was handcuffed, put in leg irons and later assaulted by a guard in the jail.
