BASE­BALL Is­rael made his­tory af­ter win­ning gold in the Euro­pean Cham­pi­onships – and then ded­i­cated their tri­umph to Shon Mond­shire.

Peter Kurz’s side romped home af­ter beat­ing hosts Slove­nia in the fi­nal.

Al l squad mem­bers had t he ini­tials SM em­bla­zoned on their caps in mem­ory of Mond­shire, the for­mer Is­rael base­ball player who was killed while serv­ing in Gaza.

Team Is­rael man­ager Kurz said: “The team played phe­nom­e­nally. Their dom­i­nant per­for­mance at the tour­na­ment proves that Is­rael base­ball is firmly on the in­ter­na­tional map.”

Is­rael be­gan well by sweep­ing past Fin­land 13-1 be­fore down­ing Latvia 9-0. Ro­ma­nia were next to be sent pack­ing af­ter an 8-3 semi-fi­nal win.

And Slove­nia could not stop the Is­raeli j ug­ger­naut as they were crowned cham­pi­ons with a 14-0 win.

As well as tak­ing home gold, Is­rael also sealed a place in the B Pool of the Con­fed­er­a­tion of Euro­pean Base­ball for the first time.

Kurz added: “This won­der­ful vic­tory is a historic mo­ment for Is­rael base­ball.”
