NOW IS THE MOMENT FOR US TO STAND FIRM

-

I do not in any way diminish the horror of what has taken place in Paris, or the experience of the French Jewish community. Nor do I disregard the outbreaks of hostility within the UK; likewise noting it is often those loudest in protesting, rightly, against Islamophobia that house within their communities schools where hostility to Jews is standard teaching. But we Jews, comprising British citizens in place for generations, should and must be outraged that, as British citizens, we find ourselves subjected to outbursts of prejudice that are an insult to us as both citizens of this country and as Jews.

Yes, be outraged. Be angry and take precautionary steps, but slow down, please, on all tales of fear and thoughts of departure. Let us not be party to the self-fulfilling job aimed at by the antisemites. Be Jewish and be British! Martin Polden OBE martin.poldin@btinternet.com

Anglo-Jewish leadership has not entirely distinguished itself in the aftermath of events in Paris. Of course, maintaining vigilant security and awareness of threats to our communities is of the utmost importance. But it is irresponsible of Lord Sacks to use national media platforms to promote a narrative of fear within Anglo-Jewry. Such reflexes towards the mantle of victimhood do British Jews no favours and, at the extreme, risk undermine the integration and acceptance that have been the gradual achievement of generations.

Jewish voices in the national debate have a responsibility to resist scaremongering that achieves no purpose. Our Emeritus Chief Rabbi, in particular, ought to know better. Josh Davis London, SW8

I would like congratulate Maajid Nawaaz ( Protection is not enough, JC January 15) a Muslim, on his courageous post-Charlie Hebdo analysis of the existential threat posed by Islamism to our tolerant freedom-loving way of life. We need more enlightened voices like his, Muslim and non-Muslim, calling on us to work together and tackle the evil in our midst before it’s too late. Stan Labovitch London

The Second World War poster said it all. Keep calm and carry on.

What else have Jews been doing, physically and spiritually, for two millennia? Jonathan Lewis Pinner, Middx
