THE TWO-PIECE was replaced long ago with pretty dresses and high-fashion twists on the usual stark and safe Reiss-like suit. Now, this much-loved combo is making a comeback — but not as we know it. Softer tones and fluid fabrics make this look less harsh and more feminine while scarlet reds, dove greys, mustard yellows and prints bring a sense of fun to the usual black and navy hues of the past.

The aim of the modern suit is to create a working wardrobe that can be translated into your weekend casuals too.

This matchy-matchy trend may at times look ageing and a little boring, however, this season you have the choice to step up the style ladder by choosing jumpsuits instead of trouser suits or fluid culottes instead of skirts. It’s a new way to wear your work suit yet still look contemporary and professional at the same time.

Look for pussy-bow neckties and wide-leg trousers — both key looks this season. Other offbeat pairings can be chunky boots instead of elegant mid-heels. Follow the Gucci pack and team with heavy loafers and jackets with oversized buttons that make a statement.

And don’t be afraid to layer up your suit. Fine or chunky knits are a refreshing alternative to stiff-collared shirts. They give a casual vibe to your suit without looking too informal.

This suit reboot may also be used for occasion wear too. Marc Jacobs sent models strutting down the autumn/winter 2015 catwalk with beautifully ladylike suits that were perfectly pink but also had the added tough factor of a little bit of leather. Great for the office and parties too.
