LSE ‘troubled’ by anti-Israel display

- BY NAOMI FIRSHT

THE LONDON School of Economics has condemned a student union exhibition commemorating Palestinians involved in terror attacks as “deeply troubling” but refuses to say whether it will take any action.

Jewish students at LSE complained to the student union and the university after the campus Palestine Society hosted the exhibition in October. Graphic images of injured Palestinians without background details or context were on display.

Following a report in the JC, column- ist Melanie Phillips complained to the student union and the LSE director, Professor Craig Calhoun.

The union’s general secretary Nona Buckley-Irvine rejected the complaint, but LSE director of communications Adrian Thomas replied, admitting that: “The school was deeply troubled by this exhibition.”

He added: “We believe that both the content and the manner in which it was displayed caused serious harm to relations between sections of our community on campus. The apparent celebration, even if unintended, of violence and perpetrators of violence caused significant distress to students who identify with victims of that violence.”

But asked what action the university intended to take, an LSE spokesman said: “LSE does not, as standard, provide information on matters concerning internal conduct to third parties.

The spokesperson added: “The school does not share the students’ union analysis of this event but we will continue to remind all parties of the need for student societies to balance robust debate with mutual respect for fellow students.”
