Euro aliyah highest ever

- BY JC REPORTER

JEWISH EMMIGRATION to Israel from Western Europe has reached an all-time high, according to figures released last week.

The Jewish Agency revealed that 9,880 Western European Jews had made aliyah in 2015 — the highest number ever recorded.

The vast majority — nearly 8,000 — came from France, a country that has been suffering from repeated antisemitic attacks.

Figures released by the Jewish Agency earlier in the week showed that the number of Jews from the UK making aliyah in 2015 rose by almost 25 per cent on the previous year, making it the third highest aliyah figure in a decade.

According to Spanish newspaper LaVanguardia, aliyah from Morocco is accelerating fast. It reports that, in 2014, a total of 729 people emigrated to Israel from the North African country, up from 297 the previous year.

The main reason for the exodus are increasing fears of terror attacks.

A jihadi-style video posted on the internet last October contained images of prominent Moroccan Jews and urged Muslims to “cut off the heads” of Israelis.
