- BYJOSHJACKMAN

THE REPUBLICAN candidate for vicepresident has a long history of supporting Israel.

Donald Trump chose Indiana governor Mike Pence to be his running mate ahead of the Republican National Convention on Monday.

Under Mr Pence’s leadership, Indiana passed a law that required the state to actively avoid doing any business with companies which boycott, divest from or sanction Israel.

The governor said at the time that he had “long believed Israel is our most cherished ally” and that the law represented “a strong message of support on behalf of all the people of Indiana to the people of Israel.

He backs Israel’s security fence, and has organised the Indiana-Israel Business Exchange for two years running.

Matt Brooks, executive director of the RepublicanJewishCoalition, welcomed Mr Trump’s choice of running mate.

“Not only has Governor Pence been a terrific governor in Indiana but he has also been a critical leader and important voice regarding Israel during his time in the House and as governor.

“Governor Pence understands that strong support by the US is essential to maintaining the strength and security of the only democracy and our greatest ally in the Middle East.”
