Scare tactic that works

“THE KIND of event which took place last week creates a lot of fear within communal circles, and we believe this is one of the main intentions behind this,” says a representative of Gesher EU, the organistion that supports individauls wishing to leave strictly Orthodox communities.

“It can have a definite effect on anyone strictly Orthodox who is thinking of leaving that way of life — losing a relationship with your child/children can be devastating.

“It is very common within the Charedi community for the religious parent to receive full financial support throughout the court process to ensure the children remain with them. This is often at the emotional cost of children losing contact with the parent leaving their religious life.

“Parents departing from Orthodoxy will often also make an application for a change of schooling for their children. This is so that they can access an education in a mainstream school, rather than a private religious school which offers limited secular education. In the UK the courts are secular and in most cases the request for a change of schooling will be granted, as the courts will favour the children receiving a more mainstream education.

“This is seen as a huge threat by the Charedi community; the knowledge that people can leave, take their children with them and live successfully outside of the community.

“An event like the one last Wednesday is a clear warning to those thinking of leaving, as well as a scare tactic; “if you leave we have the money, power and resources to fight you. We can ensure your children stay within the community and are alienated from you.”

“This does work to some extent and deters many who would otherwise leave, knowing they will be facing a legal battle with possibly damaging consequences.

“However, those who are determined to depart and access a more secular lifestyle will find the support necessary from organisations like ours.”
