Wishing to take up German or Polish passports is shocking

- JC,

I was amazed to read ( Sept 2) of the numbers of Jews wishing to relinquish British passports in favour of German or Polish nationality. Have these people no memory of the past 75 years? I agree that there is some antisemitism and antiimmigrant feeling in Britain at present — but hardly as virulent as on the Continent.

For more than 300 years, Britain has welcomed immigrants from many parts of the world. To think that Jews born in this country or whose parents and grandparents were refugees from Poland and Germany are prepared to go back, beggars belief.

Those of us who voted to leave the EU did so because we objected to the petty restrictions imposed by the EU, particularly on small businesses and the fact that the Commission is run in a most anti-democratic manner. The European parliament is no more than a discussion group without power to overturn any laws submitted by the president.

I can only hope and pray that those who wish to give up their British nationality for German or Polish do not live to regret their action. Mrs D B Curzon London SE13

I am shocked that so many Jews in this country are applying for European passports post-Brexit.

How can they want to live in Germany, Austria or Poland when those countries expelled their ancestors at best or at worst murdered them?

How can they want to live in a country whose earth is soaked in Jewish blood or, in the case of Poland, walk on fields beneath which Jews are buried? My own family escaped from Vienna when I was a child and my late mother said that she could never return there, even for a visit.

It was England that took us in as refugees and saved our lives. Have they forgotten this fact in their rush to be “European”?

In any case, if British Jews want to leave post-Brexit, we have a home to go to; a country where there is no antisemitism; schools and shuls do not need to be guarded at all times and, above all, where we will be welcomed with open arms. That country is Israel.
