ARE TOO MANY YOUNG JEWS SELFISH?

-

Do you think young people live in a bubble and have a lack of awareness about poverty outside the community?

Nathalie Holt, 22, from Radlett

“That’s quite a bold statement. That’s really quite condescending. “There’s always a bubble surrounding Judaism. I know what he means. It’s a protected, shielded world, but it’s a big generalisation that doesn’t apply to everyone.”

Amy, 22, a teacher, from Hendon

“I do agree we live in a bubble. I’ve never been to places like India. I have no idea what they are like and I imagine going there and seeing the conditions some people live in would be eye-opener. It is a good idea and I would have done it if I had chance.”

Rebecca Judah, 17, from Golders Green

“I feel Jewish young people are more interested in helping in Israel, because it is what we are taught to focus on. I think we completely live in a bubble, we go to Jewish school, our friends are Jewish, all our socialising and learning is Jewish. “I think the project is a good idea. It would be a really good learning experience.”

Ari Grossman, 17

“We are always taught about giving to Israel and helping there and that there is poverty, but we are not really talked to about what goes on outside the community. “We do live in our own bubble and I would be really interested in the chance to apply for a project like this.”

Adal Attias, 27, from Ramat Gan, Israel,

“I agree to an extent, but Jewish education is focused on other people and what we can do for others. “I think we do a lot. We have our own problems. We need to have a balance between the two.”
