Mixed bag for Masters on Israel tour

FOOTBALL STUART Lustigman described the Maccabi Masters League’s ninth tour of Israel as a resounding success, although they experience­d mixed fortunes on the pitch.

Fielding two teams (above), GB were defeated in their matches against Israel’s over-45 Maccabiah 2017 team and Ashdod. They then played two further matches against one another with Maccabi Sharks beating Maccabi Jets twice, coming from two goals down to win 3-2 in the first match and 5-2 in the second, both officiated by Maccabi referee Steve Levy.

The teams scored 14 goals between them, with top-scorer Phil Mayer registerin­g four, Malcolm Joseph three, John Holman three, David Pollock three and one for Geoff Isaacs.

Tour organiser and head of a 44-person party Lustigman said: “I’m delighted that this tour has been just as successful as the previous eight and I’m sure that everyone feels that much closer to the Jewish State through visits to various institutio­ns.”

Strikes from Dan Suissa, Simon Ritterband and Neil Kochane earned HMH a surprise 3-0 victory over defending champions Chigwell Athletic in Division One of the Mac ca bi Masters League.

Brady Maccabi A climbed into second place with Paul Shamplina, Mark Wagman and Ashley Davidson registerin­g in the 3-0 success over Maccabi London Lions A. Brady B came from a goal down to beat Temple Fortune 2-1. James Ryan had put Fortune in front but Brady hit back with goals from Trevor Tucker and Jonathan Kalms. Marshside drew 2-2 against Hendon Harriers. Efforts from Andy Diamond and Jon Nesbitt were cancelled out by Fara Moghim and Gil Barel.
