Ce­sarani — who died in Oc­to­ber 2015 be­fore the book was pub­lished. It is now avail­able in a hefty, il­lus­trated pa­per­back (Pan, £14.99). In it, Ce­sarani ar­gues that Hitler’s pol­icy to ex­ter­mi­nate Europe’s Jews was “nei­ther planned nor in­evitable”.
