Lions need four more wins for title triumph
FOOTBALL LONDON Lions are closing in on the Herts Senior County League Premier Division title following a 9-1 win over Belstone.
Andy Landesberg’s team are now just a maximum of 11 points — or four wins — from the championship and a promotion back to the Spartan South Midlands League with nine games left of the league season.
Having scored 10 times against Belstone in the cup a fortnight ago, the margin of victory reflects the gulf currently between the Rowley Lane club and the rest of the league.
The Lions opened the scoring from an unlikely source when Harry Hatchwell scored his first goal of the season. The hosts were gifted a second goal when Adam Lipman’s cross was deflected into the net by a Belstone defender.
Top-scorer James Gershfield made it 3-0 with his 43rd goal of the season. Belstone pulled one back but the Lions stepped up a gear and further strikes from Austin Lipman, substitute Max Kyte (2), Gershfield (2) and captain Josh Kennet completed the rout.
On this form, the Spartan South Midlands League should be wary as a title win in March looks increasingly inevitable from this young side.
