Career plus a dog: making it work

- BY ROLAND REHO Roland Reho is director at H&H Dog Training

IS IT possible to have both a dog and a full-time job? Many people feel apprehensive about leaving a dog at home for more than couple of hours, especially if they have spent a lot of time with him since he was a puppy, or previously worked from home. This feeling may be mutual, as dogs are pack animals and could suffer separation anxiety — a painful daily experience for some dogs.

1 START EARLY

Get the puppy used to being alone from day one. Slowly increase length of time you are away and ensure the dog is comfortable. Consider an appropriate cage for puppies and young dogs.

2 TEACH RELAXATION/SLEEP

Have a routine; it is easier for a dog to cope with separation if he is expecting it. Ideally always work the same hours.

Exercise your dog before you leave; a tired dog is a happy dog. If you are unable to provide a physical stimulation, mental stimulus is better that none.

Find a quiet place in your house for him to settle and sleep. For anxious dogs, a large rooms with windows can be a scary place to settle. With cage or without, a small quiet room with no windows will do the job.

Give him a snack, as this will help get over the initial few minutes after you leave and the chewing reflex will settle him.

No long goodbyes and restrain your emotions when returning. Be casual.

3 DOG WALKER

If you will be away for a prolonged period, think about hiring a dog walker. For most dogs, an absence lasting more than four hours will be too long.

Try to break up the day with a walk, or book a morning walk if you do not have time to take him out before you leave.

Get him used to group dog walking from early age, to create a strong bond between walker and dog.

Find someone experienced and reliable and make sure your dog will fit into their pack. This will give you peace of mind while you are working.

If your dog already suffers with separation anxiety, seek professional help.
