Percy Sheere

-

A stalwart of the Redbridge community for well over 50 years, Percy Sheere. who has died aged 88, was one of the founder-members of Newbury Park Synagogue in 1969. He saw the synagogue grow from small beginnings in the Station Hall to permanent premises in Wessex Close, opened on April 1, 1973.

He held every major position there on various committees and served as warden for over 40 years. He regularly attended religious services, and his devotion earned him a life presidency of the shul. He was thrilled to receive a congratulatory letter from the Chief Rabbi and a presentation from the community.

Sheere chaired the Israel committee, and made hospital visits as a lay chaplain. As a member of North East Regional Synagogues, he was involved with the local scouts and helped found the Clay Hall Masonic Lodge. He continued to attend the newly merged Newbury Park and Clay Hall synagogues, now called Redbridge United.

By this time Sheere was sadly suffering with dementia, although he continued to welcome all newcomers with his normal smile and reassuring handshake, always taking them under his wing in his normal manner. He never complained and accepted his changing circumstances with equanimity and good humour.

His interests included cards, jigsaws and discussing sport. A keen dog lover, he had four Shih Tzus over a period of 45 years; the last passed away at the same time as his final hospitalisation. After he retired from his double glazing business, he took up golf. His wife pre-deceased him in 1999 after 50 years of happy marriage.

He is survived by his children Jan and Harvey, son in law Jonathan, granddaughter Jodie Beth, sister Renée and extended family.
