QUICK WINS FOR FESTIVE MEALS

-

Cheesecake does not have to be traditional. Karen Staszewski, owner of Kosher Kingdom’s eat-andgo range, Munch ’n’ Crunch, will be offering new interpretations of the Shavuot treat this year: “We have introduced two new variations — a layered cheesecake (11 layers of biscuit and cheese topped with a chocolate ganache) and a cheesecake sandwich snack (a disc of cheesecake between two biscuits). We also have a cheesecake crumble cake, which is a Madeira cake with a tube of cheesecake running through it, so you get a blob of it in each slice.”

There are also simpler cheesecakes, stocked year-round and usually sold in slices. They are topped with cherry; dulche de leche (the most popular); blueberry or plain. A sugar-free version is also available. “We can do a whole cake but would prefer customers to order them in advance if possible.”

Another treat offered all year is the cheesecake delight

— a snack pot filled with a cheesecake base and topped with cheesecake filling.

For a savoury option, try the mushroom or spinach lasagnes or the quiche – with mushroom (the favourite); spinach; tomato; sweetcorn or tuna. Staszewski also offers a ready meal of potato, onion and mushroom blintzes in a cheese sauce.

Seed and Bean’s chocolate has been around since 2005 but was only recently certified kosher. It is organic and Fairtrade and comes in a rainbow of gorgeously packaged flavours.

It is also made here in the UK. Although there are 23 types, only the milk and white chocolate varieties are hechshered (by the KLBD) and these are a perfect Shavuot treat.

Flavours to look out for are rich milk chocolate; tangerine; sea salt and lime; hazelnut and almond or caffe mocha. In white chocolate, there are raspberry and vanilla or lemon and poppy flavours.

So environmentallyconscious are they that even the pretty wrapper is biodegradable. The bars are sold in kosher supermarkets, Wholefoods and Planet Organic.

The recent hummus “crisis” left kosher diners feeling smug. Hummus produced in the UK under the Me Too! label remained on supermarket shelves throughout, allowing kosher dipping to continue unabated. And now Ocado shoppers can have it delivered to their door.
