MACCABIAH MEDALLISTS

THE GAMES FENCER Nick Lakeland became Team Maccabi GB’s first golden boy as they piled up the medals in the 20th Maccabiah Games in Israel.

Lakeland struck gold in the Masters foil final and then added a silver to his collection in the epee event in Acre, while team-mate Richard Bernstein also claimed a silver in the Open foil.

Bernstein said: “We were delighted with our medals. It was a terrific competitio­n.”

There was also silver service from gymnast Zoe Harris in the floor exercise and she added a second medal with a super performanc­e on the uneven bars to earn a bronze.

And the girls lacrosse team made history by taking silver in a tough final against the USA.

Double silver honours went to the table tennis Masters men Jeremy Banks and Martin Schapira in the team and doubles events, with team playerboss Jeremy Banks beating an Israeli national player along the way.

The junior girls table tennis duo of Jessica Abrahams and Arianna Di Giammarino also claimed a silver while their male counterpar­ts, Zack Cantor, Sammy Kaye, Daniel Olsberg and Carl Breindel clinched a bronze.

Junior team boss Robin Ashleigh said: “I am proud of my team. They faced some world-ranked opponents.”

Douglas Greenston and Terry Lichkin took a bronze in the lawn bowls pairs, while in judo there were bronzes for Jonah Alfert in the junior U55kg category and Philip Bloom in the Masters 100kg.

On the water Samuel Deutsch rowed in with a bronze in the men’s quads and Sara Black earned a bronze in the Jerusalem half-marathon, while Ewan Taylor’s 50m freestyle bronze was GB’s first individual swimming medal in 25 years.
