Oliel hits back in double time

- BY LAURA STADLER

TENNIS ISRAELI junior Yshai Oliel wrapped up his opening round against American Alexandre Rotsaet in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 with an aura of calm determination.

But the 12th seed lacked the ability to do the same again, falling decisively in the second round to French Matteo Martineau 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday.

“I didn’t attack as much as I should. He played smart and deserved to win,” said Oliel, 17.

However, within two hours Oliel was back on court in fine form with his American partner Andrew Fently. The aggression was back in force as they hammered their opponents Brian Cemoch and Jesper De Jong in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

Oliel and Fently have already secured two tournament titles together this year and the partnership looks on track to go deep into the Wimbledon junior doubles.

“I feel good that things went better than this morning,” said Oliel.

“This is our third tournament together. We are a good team with a good relationship on and off court.” Now 13 in the junior rankings, Oliel began his tennis career at four, inspired by champion Rafael Nadal. Indeed not only does the 2017 Australian Open junior runner-up also play left-handed, but he has also captured Nadal’s raw aggressive style, powerful serve and courteous on-court manners. “I have learned a lot from Nadal, especially his good attitude and how he never gives up,” he said. “A good attitude gives you a lot of points. Here on grass the ball is fast, you need work with your legs bent and be ready to fight every point. I hope to come back next year in the men’s draw.”
