Fox trots out positives in trade relations with Israel

- BY BEN WEICH

INTERNATIONAL TRADE Secretary Liam Fox has told a Jewish Care business breakfast that Israel will be a key partner for post-Brexit Britain.

Addressing 300 guests at Claridges in central London, Dr Fox also said that charities like Jewish Care “could not flourish” without the wealth created for donors by global trade.

Commending last month’s Tel Aviv in London festival, he said he had been surprised by the many similarities between the two cities, “not only in their formidable international reputations for technology, innovation and financial services but in the vibrancy of the culture that we share.

“These parallels are indicative of the complementary nature of the Israeli and UK economies. It is a strong foundation from which to enhance our future relationship.

“The UK is already the number one destination in Europe for Israeli investment with over 300 companies already operating here.”

Dr Fox also declared himself a “longstanding friend of the Israeli people” and praised Jewish Care’s contribution to society. Having worked as a GP, “I have experienced first hand how much of a difference charitable organisations Dr Liam Fox (right) chats to breakfast guest Mark Laurence

like Jewish Care can make, caring for the most vulnerable people in our society. Charities can provide targeted care within communities, often reaching parts the state cannot.”

Hours after the breakfast — which

raised £30,000 for Jewish Care’s frontline services — the Department for International Trade tweeted that the Secretary of State “champions the £3.7 billion trading relationship between the UK and Israel”.
