Furman targets UK return after World Cup

- BY DANNY CARO

FOOTBALL DEAN Furman has indicated he would like to finish his career in England.

Furman, 29, lifted the MTN8 Cup after helping SuperSport United beat Cape Town City on penalties at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban last weekend.

The final finished 1-1 after normal time before United ran out 4-2 winners in the shoot-out, with Furman converting the second spot-kick for United.

Furman was first on the books of Chelsea before moving to Rangers. He had successful spells at Bradford City, Oldham Athletic and Doncaster Rovers before moving to his native South Africa two years ago.

“I’m loving being back in South Africa,” said Furman, “but my current contract finishes at the end of the season. I’m planning to sign a extension for another year but am keen to return to the UK afterwards.” Furman is looking forward to South Africa’s last two World Cup qualifiers. He missed the controversial match against Senegal — which South Africa won — only for FIFA to order a replay after the referee was found guilty of match-fixing.

“We must beat Senegal home and away,” said Furman. “We have the quality to win both matches and although it looks like Sadio Mane will miss out through injury, we know they have some excellent players. “It’s been an amazing experience playing in the stadiums used for the World Cup here and my dream of reaching the finals is still alive.”
