Britannia rules over Kapoor’s Brit Award

-

SIR ANISH Kapoor has designed the trophy which will be given to the winners of next year’s Brit Awards.

The world-famous Jewish sculptor has created a red rectangular prism block with the figure of Britannia, the female personification of Britain, depicted inside.

“Sculpture is often a process of positive and negative form. I have made the award using both,” Sir Anish said.

Nominations for the music awards, which will be given out at a ceremony at the O2 Arena on February 21, are yet to be announced.

Jason Iley, chairman of the Brit Awards and CEO of Sony Music, said: “Anish has created some of the most adventurous and memorable works of our lifetime, which is reflected in the new Brit award.

“He constantly pushes boundaries and challenges the norm and I love the way he has reimagined this year’s award. The beauty of this award is that it challenges perspectives. Every which way you look at it, you discover more.”

Born in Mumbai to an Iraqi-Jewish mother and Indian father, Sir Anish once lived in Israel before moving to the UK. He is a winner of the Turner Prize.

His work includes the Holocaust memorial at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue in St John’s Wood, the 70 Candles project for Holocaust Memorial Day in 2015, and the Orbit sculpture in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Previous Brit Award trophies have been designed by Tracey Emin and Damien

Hurst.
