COMMUNAL LEADERS have congratulated Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle on the announcement of their engagement.

A statement issued on Tuesday confirmed that the pair will marry in May 2018. The ceremony will be at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

Following the announcement issued by Clarence House, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis said: “I am delighted to hear of the engagement of Prince Harry to Megan Markle. I wish them a lifetime of health, happiness and continued blessings together. Mazaltov!”

The Board of Deputies said: “Mazeltov to Prince Harry and Meghan. We wish them a very happy life together.“

Israel’s president Reuven Rivlin also sent a message of congratulations to the couple. President Rivlin tweeted: “Sending our warmest regards to Her Majesty the Queen, Duke of Edinburgh, all the Royal Family & the British people, from Nechama & me, & all the Israeli people. We invite them to enjoy their honeymoon in Israel!

Former Chief Rabbi, Lord Jonathan Sacks also tweeted his best wishes, wishing the couple “happiness & joy as they embark on their new life together.

Ms Markle had previously been married to Trevor Engelson, a Jewish film producer from Great Neck, New York. They wed in September 2011 at Ocho Rios, Jamaica, after dating for seven years, but divorced in August 2013, citing “irreconcilable differences”.

Ms Markle, who grew up in Los Angeles, played Rachel Zane in US TV drama Suits. She has been dating Prince Harry since the summer of 2016, and the pair secretly got engaged earlier this month. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh said they were “delighted for the couple and wish them every happiness”, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said.

Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, said they were “very excited for Harry and Meghan”, adding: “It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together”. After they are married, the couple will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace, very near the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
