JBD names new homes

-

JEWISH BLIND & Disabled’s new £6.7 million development in Bushey Heath is to be named in memory of sisters Dyna and Fala Weinstock.

They were part of a family of 10 children who grew up in Berlin. The Weinstocks’ raincoat factory was seized when the Nazis came to power and many family members were murdered.

Dyna survived Auschwitz and came to England after the war with Fala, who had fled to Switzerland, and brother David. Dyna died in 1995 and Fala in 2001, after which a trust was established to support causes which reflected their ethos.

The trust’s Peter Swimer said: “Knowing how generous they were to Jewish causes during their lifetimes — and the fact they lived not far from Bushey Heath — we are sure they would have been absolutely thrilled to be associated with this wonderful new building.”

Being constructed next to JBD’s Cecil Rosen Court, the building will offer 19 mobility apartments, allowing adults with physical or visual impairment to live independently.

JBD chief executive Hazel Kaye said: “It is a privilege to know our development will carry the name of these two special sisters. It ensures their memory will not only live on but will be a blessing to people enabled to live life as they choose and not as their disability would otherwise dictate.”

This ensures sisters’ memory will live on’
